Contributor's verdict

"Welcomed with coffee, a free upgrade, and exposed 17th-century beams before I'd even reached my room — The Pilgrm has the rare gift of feeling personal in a city built for the opposite."

Tucked into Paddington, The Pilgrm offers 73 guest rooms and exactly the kind of restraint a good boutique hotel needs — everything you need, nothing you don’t. The art collection and antique atmosphere lean into ’60s London character rather than chasing trends, and the cafe’s breakfast is genuinely worth getting up for.

Check-in set the tone for the whole stay: coffee and tea downstairs, a warm welcome, and an unprompted upgrade to a double room. The hotel’s intimate scale means service stays personal rather than procedural — the kind of attentiveness larger properties struggle to replicate.

The Rooms

Rooms are well-designed rather than spacious — best suited to solo travelers or couples, with the queen bed making things feel a touch snug. What they lack in square footage they make up for in character: exposed beams and stonework from the building’s 17th-century bones, wooden parquet flooring, vintage chests of drawers, and unique carpets that make every room feel individually considered rather than templated. The rainfall showerhead is a small but well-placed touch of luxury in the compact bathroom.

Things to do

The location does a lot of heavy lifting. One block from Paddington Underground Station puts the rest of London within easy reach, while the immediate neighborhood holds its own — excellent restaurants, bars, and one of the better jazz venues around, all within a few blocks. The Transport Museum, Grant Museum of Zoology, Kensington Palace, and the Albert Memorial are all within walking distance, with Hyde Park a short stroll away.
